In Focus: The Glahn Model
The Glahn Model investigates the extent to which mucosal suction can cause microtrauma when using conventional eyelet catheters and Micro-hole Zone Technology catheters.1
This is carried out through ex vivo testing of the catheters with tissue from porcine bladders, and subsequent visual and histological examination of the tissue damage caused by mucosal suction.1

Conclusion

Conventional eyelet catheters caused mucosal suction which led to microtrauma to the epithelium.

Micro-hole Zone Technology catheters showed reduced microtrauma inside the catheter due to reduced mucosal suction compared to conventional eyelet catheters.

The images above show trauma assessment of conventional eyelet catheters which revealed partial removal of epithelium for all conventional eyelet catheter brands.

Micro-hole Zone Technology catheters resulted in both less trauma compared to conventional eyelet catheters.
